VAT Calculator Formula & How It Works

Add VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + VAT/100) | Remove VAT: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + VAT/100)
  • VAT Amount = Gross − Net = Net × VAT/100
  • UK standard VAT: 20% (reduced: 5%, zero: 0%)
  • EU VAT: 17–27% depending on country
  • India GST: 5%, 12%, 18%, 28% slabs (see GST Calculator)

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax common in Europe, UK, and many other countries. Unlike US sales tax (added at final sale), VAT is collected at each stage of production, with businesses reclaiming the VAT they paid on inputs. The end consumer pays the final VAT-inclusive price.

VAT Calculator FAQs

How do you calculate VAT?

Add VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + VAT%). Example at 20%: £100 × 1.20 = £120. Remove VAT: Net = Gross ÷ 1.20 = £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100. VAT amount = Gross − Net = £20.

What is the VAT rate in the UK?

UK VAT rates: Standard 20% (most goods/services), Reduced 5% (domestic fuel, children's car seats, mobility aids), Zero 0% (food, children's clothing, books, public transport).

What is the difference between VAT and GST?

Both are consumption taxes collected at each supply chain stage. India calls its version GST (Goods and Services Tax) with multiple slabs (5–28%). VAT is used in the UK and EU. Conceptually they are nearly identical.
