Sales Tax Calculator Formula & How It Works

Price + Tax = Price × (1 + Tax Rate) | Pre-tax = Inclusive Price ÷ (1 + Tax Rate)
  • Add tax: Final = Original × (1 + rate/100)
  • Remove tax: Original = Inclusive ÷ (1 + rate/100)
  • Tax amount = Final − Original
  • Combined rate = State rate + County rate + City rate

Sales tax is a consumption tax added to the purchase price of goods and services. US combined sales tax rates range from 0% (Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, Alaska) to 10%+ in some cities. Most states have a base rate with additional county/city rates layered on top.

Sales Tax Calculator FAQs

How do you calculate sales tax?

Tax amount = Price × (Tax Rate / 100). Final price = Price + Tax = Price × (1 + Rate/100). Example: $100 at 8% sales tax = $100 × 1.08 = $108 total, with $8 tax.

Which US states have no sales tax?

Five states have no statewide sales tax: Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Alaska (though Alaska allows local taxes). Most other states have rates from 4% (Hawaii, Wyoming) to 7.25% (California base rate).

Is sales tax applied before or after coupons/discounts?

In most states, sales tax is calculated on the discounted price (after coupons). Some states tax the original price before coupons. For precise calculations, check your state's rules.
