Discount Calculator Formula & How It Works

Sale Price = Original × (1 − Discount/100) | Savings = Original × (Discount/100)
  • Discount% = percentage off the original price
  • Savings = Original Price × Discount Rate
  • Sale Price = Original − Savings
  • Discount% from prices = (Original − Sale) / Original × 100

A percentage discount reduces the original price by a fraction. 20% off £150: Savings = £150 × 0.20 = £30; Sale Price = £150 − £30 = £120. To find the original price from a discounted price: Original = Sale Price ÷ (1 − Discount/100). This is useful when a discount tag shows the final price.

Discount Calculator FAQs

How do you calculate a percentage discount?

Savings = Original Price × (Discount% / 100). Sale Price = Original − Savings. For 30% off $200: Savings = $200 × 0.30 = $60. Sale Price = $200 − $60 = $140.

What original price gives $75 after a 25% discount?

Reverse calculation: Original = Sale Price ÷ (1 − Discount%). $75 ÷ (1 − 0.25) = $75 ÷ 0.75 = $100. Or: if $75 is 75% of original, then 1% = $75/75 = $1, and 100% = $100.

How do double discounts work?

A 20% discount followed by an additional 10% discount is NOT 30% total. First discount: $100 → $80 (20% off). Second discount: $80 × 0.90 = $72. Combined effect: 28% off, not 30%. Calculate each discount sequentially.
