Scientific Notation Calculator

Convert numbers to scientific notation and perform arithmetic with very large or small numbers.

Scientific Notation

4.5 × 10-5

Coefficient: 4.5 | Exponent: -5

Scientific Notation Calculator Formula & How It Works

a × 10ⁿ where 1 ≤ |a| < 10 | Multiply: (a×10ⁿ)(b×10ᵐ) = (a×b)×10^(n+m)
  • Coefficient a: must satisfy 1 ≤ |a| < 10
  • Move decimal left → positive exponent
  • Move decimal right → negative exponent
  • Divide: (a×10ⁿ)/(b×10ᵐ) = (a/b)×10^(n−m)

Scientific notation expresses very large (6.022×10²³ atoms/mol) or very small (1.6×10⁻¹⁹ coulombs) numbers compactly. To convert: move the decimal until the coefficient is between 1 and 10; count moves for the exponent. Right moves → negative exponent. When multiplying, add exponents; when dividing, subtract them.

Scientific Notation Calculator FAQs

How do you write 0.00045 in scientific notation?

Move decimal right 4 places to get 4.5. Negative exponent because we moved right: 4.5 × 10⁻⁴. Check: 4.5 × 0.0001 = 0.00045 ✓.

What is the difference between scientific notation and engineering notation?

Scientific notation: coefficient is between 1 and 10 (any exponent). Engineering notation: exponent must be a multiple of 3 (0, ±3, ±6, ±9…) corresponding to SI prefixes (kilo, mega, giga, milli, micro). 0.045 = 4.5×10⁻² (scientific) = 45×10⁻³ = 45 milli (engineering).
