Exponent Calculator Formula & How It Works

xⁿ | x⁻ⁿ = 1/xⁿ | x^(m/n) = ⁿ√(xᵐ)
  • Positive exponent: multiply base by itself n times
  • Negative exponent: take reciprocal (1/xⁿ)
  • Zero exponent: x⁰ = 1 for any x ≠ 0
  • Fractional exponent: x^(1/n) = nth root of x

Exponents represent repeated multiplication. 2³ = 2×2×2 = 8. Negative exponents represent reciprocals: 2⁻³ = 1/8. Fractional exponents represent roots: 8^(1/3) = ∛8 = 2. The exponent rules (product, quotient, power, zero, negative) make algebra manipulation efficient.

Exponent Calculator FAQs

What is anything to the power of 0?

Any non-zero number raised to the power of 0 equals 1. This is because xⁿ/xⁿ = x^(n-n) = x⁰ = 1. The value 0⁰ is indeterminate — mathematicians disagree on its value, though it's often defined as 1 in combinatorics.

What is a negative exponent?

A negative exponent means take the reciprocal: x⁻ⁿ = 1/xⁿ. Example: 5⁻² = 1/5² = 1/25 = 0.04. Negative exponents are not negative numbers — they represent fractions.
