Area Calculator Formula & How It Works

Square: s² | Rectangle: l×w | Triangle: ½bh | Circle: πr²
  • Trapezoid: ½(a+b)×h
  • Parallelogram: base × height
  • Ellipse: π × a × b
  • Regular polygon: (perimeter × apothem) / 2

Area measures the 2D space enclosed by a shape in square units. Rectangle (l×w) is the base formula from which many others derive. Triangle = half of parallelogram. Circle = π × radius² (π ≈ 3.14159). Complex shapes can be divided into simpler ones and the areas added.

Area Calculator FAQs

What is the area of a circle?

Area = π × r² where r is the radius. Diameter d = 2r, so Area = π × (d/2)². For a circle with radius 5: Area = π × 25 ≈ 78.54 square units.

How do you find the area of a triangle?

Area = ½ × base × height. The height must be perpendicular to the chosen base. With three sides (a,b,c): use Heron's formula: Area = √[s(s-a)(s-b)(s-c)] where s=(a+b+c)/2.

What are the units for area?

Area is measured in square units: mm², cm², m², km², in², ft², yd², acres, hectares. 1 hectare = 10,000 m². 1 acre ≈ 4,047 m². Convert using squared conversion factors: 1 ft² = 144 in² (not 12!).
